“That is our only safety mechanism,” said Swimme. “LinkedIn is saying they’re fine with sex workers not having a safety network … to protect each other from rape, assault, theft, extortion. So for me, social media and the sex industry is more about sex workers networking with each other than with finding clients.”

Plus, she said, LinkedIn isn’t even addressing the real issue; the ban is a bandaid on a geyser. The number of people turning to sex work increases every day, especially in a down economy and especially for disadvantaged groups like women and trans people. If LinkedIn actually cared about prostitution, Swimme said, they’d be about campaigning for fair wages for women, people of color, and trans folk, or an end to education discrimination and unequal pay. Banning sex work doesn’t solve anything, she noted, because sex workers will just move to another site.

“This ban,” she said, “is about scapegoating and finding a boogeyman instead of actually looking at the real issues.”

“The Internet (and Tumblr specifically) has given me a great low-pressure platform to talk about my own mental illness and read about other people’s and, as cliched as it is, there’s something really valuable in finding out that you’re not the only one going through something (far from it),” she wrote.

Through GIFs, comics, and confessionals, Tumblr helps humanize the actual people living with mental illness, putting a face to a widespread, underhelped problem.

“Blogging is perfect for that, it’s an ideal way to get personal stories out into the world to help reshape what people think when they think of mental illness,” she said. It can also be a way for people who don’t have problems with mental health to find out the small things they can do to make someone they love’s life a little easier. Tumblr opens that dialogue.

I don’t know you, I don’t know your life, and I have no idea if you’re going to leave it at “Hey, you look good in that dress!” or follow it up with “But you’d look better without it! Har har! C’mon, where’re you going? I know you heard me! Fucking cunt, nobody wants your fat ass anyway, bitch.”

When you compliment a random woman who doesn’t know you, no matter how nice you are about it, there’s a good chance she’s going to freak out internally because for all she knows, you could be that latter type. And I get that it’s really unfair that women would just assume that about you. I get that it sucks that sometimes, expressing totally reasonable opinions like “hey you’re hot” will make women terrified of you or furious at you. That’s not fair.

But if you’re going to lay the blame for that somewhere, for fuck’s sake, don’t blame the woman. Blame all the guys who have called her a bitch and a cunt for ignoring their advances. Blame all the guys who may have harassed, abused, or assaulted her in the past. Blame all the people who may never do such a thing themselves, but who were quick to blame her and tell her to just get over it. Blame the fact that if she stops and talks to you and then something bad happens, people will blame her for stopping and talking to you.”

Depending on its context, this is either a pretty funny joke making fun of the types of people who are flipping out about it, or it’s a kind of… meh joke that would be better left untweeted. But meh ≠ offensive. I refuse to get up in arms over something as superficial as nail polish.

I wrote a really long, previously unpublished thing about feminism that’s been camping out in my Google docs for about a year now. I wrote it because I, too, wanted to make a joke about nail polish. And it wasn’t a Jim Gaffe-igan (LOL!) nail polish joke, and I do understand the many differences between the two (Jim is a man commenting on women and female beauty traditions, Jim is implying [maybe] that women are only interested in pleasing men, etc.) — but women and nail polish are finally having their moment in the sun, and I need an excuse to update this Tumblr, so here we are.
