Writing about myself is new for me. I went to school for journalism. I was told never to use “I” or “me.” I took exactly one personal essay class in college and hated it, deeming it “Livejournal 101.” (And I was an avid user of Livejournal in middle and high school and still think that place is awesome, but it’s a good breeding ground for professional writing, but not the endgame of it.)
BUT I am much more comfortable writing about sources and hiding behind, “Well, I don’t necessarily think this, I just quoted a person who thinks this” to get my point across. I am a reporter and observer.
Internet writing is a lot more focused on sharing yourself and your life and your personal experiences and that is foreign to me. Most of my first attempts at personal essay are up on Thought Catalog. (Or were deleted in the great Gaby Dunn Livejournal Purge of 2006. Never forget.)
